Can I Be Friends with an AI?
Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly present in our lives. Some teens talk to it often, ask it for advice, or confide in it. But is it actually possible to be friends with an AI?
Why an AI Can Seem Like a Good Friend
It’s easy to understand why some young people develop a connection with an AI. Unlike a human being, it is available at all times. No matter the time of day or night, it is there to respond. Its answers also come very quickly. When you have a question, a problem, or simply want to chat, you don’t have to wait for someone to be available.
In addition, AIs are often designed to be pleasant and helpful. They can provide responses that reassure, encourage, or validate you. When you are going through a difficult time or feeling lonely, it can feel really good to be listened to without being judged.
But What Is an AI, Really?
Even if an AI seems to understand what you are going through, it is important to understand how it works.
An AI is not a person: it has no consciousness, personality, or life experience. It does not feel emotions, it has no empathy, and, importantly, it is often designed not to contradict you because its developers want you to keep using it. As a result, it may validate ideas or perceptions you have, even when there is no evidence that they are true. This can be risky because if your thoughts are negative, it may contribute to a spiral of anxiety, frustration, or other difficult emotions.
An AI does not think the way humans do—in fact, it does not think at all. When it responds to a message, it does not choose its words because it cares about you. It simply analyzes what you wrote and predicts which words are most likely to come next. That is why it is considered “intelligent.”
Ultimately, its responses are the result of calculations and probabilities based on an enormous amount of text it has learned to recognize. Even if some responses sound very human, it is important to remember that an AI is still a computer program.
Why Human Relationships Are Different
We get it: relationships with other people are not always easy. You may experience disagreements, conflicts, disappointments, or even betrayals from friends, romantic partners, or family members.
Sometimes people do not tell you what you want to hear, or they challenge you to think differently. In the moment, that can be frustrating or even painful. Yet these situations play an important role in your development.
Through relationships, you learn more about yourself. You discover your limits, needs, and values—in other words, what truly matters to you. Interacting with others also helps you learn how to communicate, resolve conflicts, compromise, and understand perspectives that differ from your own. In short, you learn how to be a human being in society.
Differences between people can sometimes create tension, but they also help us grow and learn.
AI Can Help, but It Cannot Replace Humans
AI can be a useful tool for reflecting, finding information, organizing your thoughts, or even getting advice when you need it. But it cannot replace human relationships.
As with anything found online, it is important to think critically about what AI tells you. It can make mistakes, invent information, or give advice that does not fit your situation. Remember: it is a computer program based on probabilities.
If an AI’s response seems important, concerning, or influences a decision you want to make, do not hesitate to discuss it with someone you trust. Sharing what the AI said can be a good way to verify the information and gain another perspective.
After all, real human relationships offer something no AI can reproduce: genuine emotions, shared lived experiences, and a true connection between two people.
